Is it true that discipline is the only way to self-growth? Is it also true that with discipline, you can change your life? If discipline is the key, why is it so hard to follow it?
To answer all the questions, yes, discipline is one of the keys to self-growth. And the thing stopping us from practising discipline is our thoughts. It is our thoughts about what others will think that stop us. And this is only the layer.
Practising discipline after learning to focus the mind and following your intuition is vital. You find what you like through meditation and learn what your heart says. And then comes discipline. Discipline, simply, is a ritual or a schedule that you follow.
Years ago, I made discipline such a huge deal. But in truth, discipline is only a few habits changed that suit your nature. It became easy to follow as I built habits that suited my nature best. You only need an intention to act, then.
Discipline is important, but knowing how to use discipline is also important. So, how do we do that?
Discipline to Find Your Art:
First, it is the discipline to find your inner voice. It is the discipline to remove the outer and inner importance, So, assuming that you meditate and begin listening to your intuition and not react through your head, let’s move ahead.
Your art is personal to you. It is something you enjoy doing. It is something that makes you happy. And the more time you spend on it, the better you get. But most importantly, you live every moment practising your art. You enjoy doing it.
Discipline can be used in many ways and for many things. It can be used for building habits, breaking habits, following your intuition, etc. Or you can use discipline to try to accept your differences. And this is what I used my discipline for. And this is the first step.
Using discipline to accept my differences. It is the discipline to choose what you really like to do. And do it without judgement and without excuses. Once this is found, then comes the other part.
Your Discipline to Practise Your Art:
Okay, so you have found what you like. But you find it difficult to continue practising your art as it differs from others. And this part of discipline is to stick to your art through thick and thin. And learn to silence the mind.
So, this is where you practise what you like and are good at. You put in the time, effort and your energy into it. While your mind tries to talk you out of it through manipulation, using doubts, excuses, blaming, and worries, you try your best to silence the mind.
It was only through the step-by-step process that I found the lifeline that suited me again. And seldom does it work that a sudden change shifts you to life line that is for you.
Conclusion
To bring discipline into your life, you should first learn to quiet your mind and the noises. Remove the inner and outer importance. Meditate to do so. Once you learn that, finding your art becomes a bit easy. Then comes the next step: sticking to your art.
Your art, at first, may appear difficult. That is because you learned a little later to listen to you. So, gradually and step by step, start to do so. Say no when needed and yes when needed. But stick to the art.
And this, my friends, is the true meaning of discipline for me.
