Realization #3 – Discipline can do wonders!

Self-discipline is an act of cultivation. It requires you to connect today’s actions to tomorrow’s results.

Gary Ryan Blair.

Nothing really matters. Nothing. When one is trying to improve, not his words, not his thoughts and not his circumstances matter. What matters is: Doing what you said you would.

And many of us, including me, have made decisions about life that were rough, or not good, or not needed, or not right. And it’s okay if you and me did them.
What’s not okay is dwelling on those decisions, those past mistakes, and underestimating your value.

Many have made this mistake of devaluing one-self because they made some wrong decision and they feel stuck. But the truth is no one is ever stuck. It’s just the mind playing with you that makes you feel stuck.

Today, I started reading the book “The 5 Second Rule.” by Mel Robbins. (how weird is it that two speakers have the same last name Tony Robbins an Mel Robbins, anyways.)

In that book she says she made the same mistakes over and over again. Which I did for a long time. But Mel Robbins put her life back on track, actually improved and reached her potential by doing one simple trick. And that trick helped her in being the best.

Using the 5 second rule is like using discipline to control our emotions and our thoughts. And many people don’t know how to discipline themselves. Or how to make themselves work smarter and harder. Really no one does.

So, successful people discipline themselves by doing one simple trick – reminding themselves about their goals every-time and asking he right questions.

For me, I didn’t have much idea how should I discipline myself or why should I discipline myself?

And the answer to that question is found in that book: I can discipline myself by asking simple questions like:

  • Why does it matter to me?
  • Why am I doing this?

This questions are hard to answer and I don’t have the answers to mine, yet.

And at last, why does discipline matter even if you don’t know what you are doing?
Disciplining yourself when you don’t know what to do gives to the power and the certainty that you are in control. And as we all know human brain thrives on that: having control.

Disciplining yourself in different and yet simple areas like: getting your finances, getting in shape, using the resources available to you at the time, being confident and doing your tasks, even when you don’t feel like it, puts you ahead.

Don’t get me wrong, but a person without a goal will only be so much. You discipline yourself at times but you will use so much energy in that, that by the end if the day you’ll feel exhausted, but physically but mentally.

And the simple answer to all this crowd is:

  1. First, setting a goal with specifics like dates and places. Any goal. (My recent goal is moving out of my parents house.). Choosing a goal that is in harmony with you, your heart and your soul is important.
  2. Then making a plan. What you will do in the mornings, in the afternoons and in the evenings.
  3. After that, divide the tasks in your day.
  4. And start right away using 5 second rule. When you feel exhausted or lacking do: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and get to work.

And there will days when you don’t feel like it, but that’s the fun in it, what you do when you don’t feel like it.
Do you muster up your energy and do it because you know that’s what you want to do.

Or do you give in. And giving in never sounds great just because life throws stones at you.

So, if you want to grow, reach your full potential, use discipline.
And if you don’t know where to start, use 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and get to work.
