Throughout my self-improvement journey, I’ve come to realize that focusing on the “how to achieve it”, distorted my discipline, motivation and action time. I also became more concerned about achieving the goal no matter what, which is good, but not when I was trying to prove something to others. We build goals and we set timelines to achieve our goals. And we do start aggressively, completing tasks from our to-do lists and staying motivated and positive.
But I soon realized that my motivation did not help me in the long run. It faded away quickly. It consumed my energy rather than use it constructively. And then, I added discipline to the equation: I became disciplined and, again, set timelines and focused on my goals. That, too, didn’t work.
And this is how I learned the importance of my why.
Before being disciplined, before I start taking actions, there’s one secret ingredient that will surely help a lot on this journey. It will build the motivation to stay discipline, the focus, the courage to say no and so on. And this one habit or thought process is knowing my WHY.
My mornings start with a why. Why am I doing this? Why must I do it? And then, add in the habits and thoughts that I want to adopt and change.
But the why here, this why will change so many things in life. We, humans, tend to revolve around the reason we are doing something. And this “why” gives us the reason to change our lives, to achieve something greater and something better because our reason is stated and personal.
Stating your why is pretty simple. And here are the steps that I followed:
- First, find what you want to achieve. Anything that makes you feel good, or want. Don’t be ashamed to ask what you want, and embrace your need.
- Second, state the why. Why you want it? Why do you deserve it? Why are you acting in such a way which is taking you closer to your goals?
- Then, build a list of habits and thoughts that you want to change and adopt. (Covered in the upcoming article.)
And this is how you find your motivation to stay disciplined and focused. By finding out your why.
